It’s a truism and the title of a book by Thomas Wolfe.
But what exactly does it mean?
It is like saying that you can’t step into the same river twice, because the water you first stepped into, has now flowed downstream. That of course is a self-evident observation. Yet it is also a sad one, because each of us yearns for home, for a past we remember.
Can We Go Home Again?
The answer is both yes and no.
No, we can not turn back the clock or travel back through time in order to reach a past, a home, that we fondly remember. But through photos and memories, old family films and stories, we can, in a certain sense, return to that home we all remember.
Photographs as a Time Machine
From the time it was first invented, around the time of the civil war in the 1860s, photography has been a billion dollar business. Even in the 1930s and 1940s when it was expensive, many moms and dads realized the value of capturing their children’s moments in time on film.
